I know Matt that you told me that to keep it stock:). Goal- street able, 400 rwhp. Budget- that's my question. What's the cost to rebuild compare to buying a 383 stroker from golen. Or is there any place around the gta, that you can buy a performance lt1.

A 350-355ci motor will have a hard time making 400+rwhp and be able to pass emissions. A 383 is more realistic and has much better chance to pass emissions.

LE2 or AI 200cc Heads/Cam - $1600-$2170
Pushrods - $150
Roller Rockers - $350
LS7 Lifters - $120
Timing Set - $150
Throttle Body - 200
Injectors - 200
ARP Head Bolts - $80
Gaskets - $100

Tune - $300-500

Clutch - $500

New Opti - $450
New Wires - $135

Thats all before you touch the shortblock.

I guess this is to rebuild or stroke it to 383. Wow about 5g. Not to bad I guess, my TA is ok shape. Plus I like the 4th gen look. I'm still researching, getting some idea's. you know any shop that would do all that?. Unless you can open your own TA shop:).

Ray - installing a used LS1 is the way I'd go rather than upgrading the original block. There's a few LS motors for sale and wiring harnesses are available for the conversion from LT1 if you want really decent HP. A couple of guys on the forum have done this - check out the projects section.
Used 99-02 F body's are another avenue but I also prefer the LT looks over LS.

That' price is without a shortblock. If you plan to go 383 your looking around 3-5k for a forged 383 shortblock plus the topend above to make that power.

An ls1 swap is not a cheap swap. Your looking at 5k for a stock ls1/6spd dropout. You need a k member and steering rack. Wire harness redone.

If your going to the effort of the swap your sure as not going to put it in stock.

Headers - 500
Cam - 400
Valvesprings - 300
Timing set - 150
Ls6 intake - 300
Tune - 500+
Etc
Etc
Etc

Plan to spend 8-10 when done right whether you go 383 lt1 or ls1/6spd swap.

So your engine is corked correct?

First you need to decide how much you love THAT car exactly before I'd offer any advice. If your not stuck on that particular car? id get a stock basic rebuild or perhaps another running LT and exchange.

If you want to mod for power? LS swap is the way to go for the long haul. Sheldon did an LT car with an LS swap

Not sure this is helpful or relavant but I'd always thought that if I had to rebuild the ole LT-1 in the Z I would replace the block with a Vette LT-1 as they came factory with four bolt mains. Little more piece of mind to support any upgrades the rotating assembly and valve train etc. I'd personally start with a well built 383 and then drop the compression a bit and add a vortech. JMO.

Here is a link to my LS1 swap http://forums.kwmuscle.com/viewtopic.php?t=3335
Not sure where it went on this forum
If your car is 95+ and auto it would be the same. If you are M6 then you need a trans and clutch too. I had about $6k into the swap with the cam, valvesprings, pushrods and headers. I did the harness and tuning. Picked up 8mpg over the 383 LT1 that it replaced and still ran 12.15 @ 108mph.
To do the LT1 build Matt is bang on with numbers

Drive it. But mind the oil meets spec, even pricey oil sometimes does NOT mean spec of these old engines. Look at the engine tag under the hood and make sure. That might solve some of the tick

Ticking aint so bad, banging is.

Id either drive it, sell it, buy an LS car TransamTom on this board has a nice one for sale, or do an LS swap.

If your dead set on sticking LT1 its going to cost you more in the long run and those pull style clutches are a pain to get right once you start making any real jam.

Good luck, have fun no matter what. Thats the main thing
