Post Need s Steering Box - Any Rebuilders Out There
I need a steering box for my Sonoma (ZQ8 with close ratio box) and even the U.S online retailers want at least $200 + another $200 for the core charge. So I am wondering if there's any place I can take my current box to get it rebuilt? There's nothing really broken with my current box, it's just got too much slop in it.

Also, does anyone have access to a proper interchange? I suspect that my steering box is the same as some third gens (irocs?) but I'd like to confirm before I consider buying anything.

Thanks!

Look it up on Rockauto and see what else that box fits (interchange). You can also easlily adjust it to tighten the pinion up if its not worn badly. Any GM shop manual that covers the steering boxes has the procedure. The pinion is tapered so moving it up or down increases/decreases the clearances.

The truck is a 2000...4.3L, Auto. 2WD.

I looked up the part on Rockauto and it only listed 1996-2003 Sonoma/S10's, but I am not sure how accurate that is since I was always under the impression that most 1980's on onwards RWD GM's used the same box. In fact some less-reliable folks on the S10forum claim to have bolted third gen F-body boxes into their trucks.

I might take you up on that Hawk...I'll do a little research to confirm if it'll fit. Least that way I could get the Camaro box rebuilt and not have too much downtime. I'll let you know.

Zack, a 3rd gen box does indeed bolt right up to tour truck without issues.

The reason its a different parr number is because the truck box is not nearly as quick ratio as an iroc or GTA box and the internal stops are not in the exact same position.

Putting a 3rd gen box in your truck should give you s better turning radius.

9 times out of 10 the steering 'slop' is not the box. Seeing how you had the box replaced already in your truck id say your rag joint is the more likely suspect as being your issue.

Thanks guys!
I have a new intermediate shaft (with new rag joint) waiting to go in. BUT I was lying under the truck with someone moving the steering wheel, I can see motion at the shaft going into the box, but no motion out of the box....So I'm making the assumption that there's at least some slop in the box.

I had trucks with a crack frame that makes the box move or the bolts are loose.Mine had solid front axles with 40" Cucv bulletproof tires though..lol
