Bit the bullet: Moser 9 inch rear axle
First the specs: Moser 9 inch heavy duty housing, 31 spline billet axles, Motive 3.89 gears, Detroit True trac differential, Nodular iron center with billet aluminum pinion support, 4 hole lower control arm relocation.
The housing is lighter than the 10 bolt housing. The center section makes up for it. It's a whopping 198 lbs dry. The 10 bolt is 159 lbs.
The unsprung weight is noticable, but in a good way for traction. It's pretty damn anchored back there in turns. It's like the road has glue on it on stop light launches.
It took a bit of bracket modification to get the watt's link working with it, but the dremel is your friend and it is centered up really nice.
I'm about 100 miles off of breaking it in, but already notice its quieter than my 10 bolt was with the motive 3.90s, has a slight hum on acceleration but its so muted that I'd attribute it to the gear cut and 9 inch size than being off. Gear was setup perfect and verified before assembly. I know I "lost" some power due to the increase in rotational weight. Being able to launch the car hard makes up for it... well once it's broken in.

Sounds like a killer set up. How do you like the watts link?

I've been on a watt's link for 1.5 years now. The watt's link is a night and day difference in the handling of a f-body. It will match up quite well to a stock z06 in turns.

Need a driveshaft first...
On another note, I found a local shop which would make a custom 3.5 aluminum ds for $367!

Good move. 9" is the way to go.
