Re: Cheap car insurance
There was also Vantage Auto Insurance at the show. Both Zehr and Vantage were $30-$40 cheaper than Hagerty for a $30K modified. ....and I just renewed, before the show, with Hagerty.

Re: Cheap car insurance
They are almost half the price of haggerty for me as well. I just need an updated appraisal then will switch over.
Haggerty bought out all the Silver Wheels policies from Landt a few years ago then jacked the prices about 50%. I've been with them for 15yrs with minimal increases, then this.. When I called to see wtf is up they said more cars from the 80s are being stolen because people drive them more than the older stuff...so we're jacking the rates.

They always have an answer...like when I moved from a high-density, high-crime area of Scarborough, to a low-crime, low-density area of Etobicoke and my rates went up. When I asked why, they said even though the number of thefts was low, the items and cars that were stolen were more expensive in the new neighborhood. WTF! So I pay more because my neighbor has 2 Ferrari's ?

Re: Cheap car insurance
Does zehr insurance offer unlimited flat bed towing? When I renewed with hagerty last month, this was what they offered for less than my caa rate. I may switch as well if so, based on the towing and lower rate.

Re: Cheap car insurance
I believe the biggest difference is around usage restrictions. I just signed up with Hagerty because I use my car occasionally to go to work, the mall, whatever. That sort of stuff is allowed on my Hagery policy (up to a limit of 8000km/year), whereas all the other insurance companies I shopped had much tighter restrictions...No driving to work, shopping, etc. I also didn't need to spend $3-400 on an appraisal with Hagerty, I just told them the value I wanted and that was it.

Re: Cheap car insurance
My car is only 19-years old so Zehr's can't quote.
Hagarty has quoted me a policy through your broker BlackZ28. Let's see if Hagarty accepts my application this year. When I called Hagarty on the phone to apply last year, the sales guy's head swelled 10-times the size of a normal person. After all my answers to his questions fit within the policy rules, he snaps and says "I think you're going to drive your car too much Mr. Ken and therefore we are declining your application".
Since then, I don't think very highly of Hagarty.
I'm one of those customers that's never had a claim in 38-years. I do nothing but pour profits into the pockets of insurance companies. If they aren't smart enough to see that? They don't really deserve my business in the first place.
If the deciding factor of owning an old muscle car relies on having Hagarty insurance versus all the other insurance companies out there. Maybe I should think of giving up the car. Thankfully, that's not the case.
This time I avoided phoning Hagarty and did everything via the broker. Let's hope this broker can break the ice. Dave's a nice guy.
My application is due for an answer from Hagarty within the next 24-hours.
I can tell you one thing for sure. The car will be insured and I will be driving my Camaro this coming Friday or Saturday, God and weather permitting. With, or without Hagarty.
Ken

Re: Cheap car insurance
Hagarty found a way to refuse me again.
My wife works downtown for the last 31-years where parking is well over $20.00 per day so takes the Go-Train.
I drive a 2011 Toyota Camry to work as a main vehicle. But because my wife has a driver's licence. Hagarty won't insure my Camaro even though it's been in storage all winter. Hagarty dictates that we are a 2-car/2-licence home and the temptation to drive the Camaro as a daily driver is too great. Policy declined. This will be my last application to Hagarty. They can keep thier insurance and I will gladly give my cash to anyone but them.
I love you RBC insurance!!! They are good people.
Dave, the insurance broker freaked out at Hagarty and told them off. For what ever it was worth. What a joke Hagarty is.
Time to call RBC and put full coverage on the Camaro. It's going to be another "Camaro Summer!"
Bye bye forever Hagarty!!! Besides, Dave is expecting my call in year's time when I can officially get quotes from Zehr's, etc...
Cheers, Ken

Re: Cheap car insurance
Im in the same boat with Zehr gotta wait another couple for the 97. I was declined by one insurer because my others cars are more than 5yrs old and will break down too often and ill drive the TA instead. I told them if I could afford 2 cars less than 5yrs old and have a TA I wouldn't be shopping for cheap insurance!

Re: Cheap car insurance
Really Flame? I was just asked if I had a regular car I drive every day that was fully insured. They must really not like money.

Re: Cheap car insurance
The newer your "classic" is the more strict their going to be about your access to a normal daily driver. When I signed the 85 T/A up with Hagerty they started asking questions until I explained that we're a 2 license household with 3 "daily drivers" (Sonoma, Benz, Firebird) fully insured and they backed right off.
Cars in the 20-30 year old range are probably the most difficult...some regular insurance companies (Bel Air) for example won't take on new coverage for a car that's older than 20 years. If your already with them and you car ages it's fine, but they won't add a new old car. So then you're looking at classic insurance, but then theres loads of hoops to jump through.
Another thing..when I got my Hagerty paperwork in the mail earlier this week they'd automatically enroled me in their roadside assistance program, and had included the $60 cost in my premium. One call to the office and they removed the roadside coverage and refunded my $60. Not sure if it was their mistake, or my broker's but I am happy to have saved another $60.

Re: Cheap car insurance
Probably the most ironic part is that I just sold my 2005 Magnum-RT 2-weeks ago. I guess that means I could have qualified... 2-weeks ago.
There is a bright side to this coin. Now I have absolutely zero restrictions. I never have to ask myself "Should I drive the car or not?". Just get in and drive.
They automatically threw the roadside assistance in for my application. I had to ask to have it removed. The assistance plan covers the car for accidents, but not break-downs. Not a very good option for the money compared to CAA for example.

Re: Cheap car insurance
That sucks that.they blew you off.
I have had no problems with Hagarty. I asked a lot of questions via email so i have it in writing, and they said that Unlimited Pleasure drives are allowed (not for regularly commuting to work as a substitute vehicle) and at 35% of a regular annual policy, especially since I'm insuring a 2002 WS6. They asked me nothing about other drivers in my family. It certainly fills my needs and avoids being restricted to 6 months of the year trying to save money on a regular policy because it reminds me of when I was 16 and had to ask Dad if it was ok to take the car our.

Re: Cheap car insurance
Thank you for your comment Mike.
By the way... On the first day out. I used my car as a daily driver and drove my car to work 21 times yesterday alone and went shopping between every drive. Then I parked it outside the garage for the night... Twice on the same night! Take that Hagarty!
I'm glad I can afford to joke and laugh about it.
Cheers, Ken
