Post Ideas for Brake Kit upgrade?
Looking to upgrade to some performance brakes .. my stock rotors were not enough to prevent me from going into the ass end of an F-150 last month.

Need some serious stopping power.

Suggestions?

I think you went into the rear of an F-150 cause you were following to close. Not cause your brakes don't work.

What size rims do you have?

You might be able to upgrade to LS1 brakes. Also, NAPA/Parts Source should be able to get you slotted rotors and better pads.

OR....you could slow down and watch for trucks when driving.

Everything you could ever want to know about upgrading third gen brakes in this link below. ebmiller88 is a solid dude too for the record. I bought some stuff off him. A bit slow answering PM's but a great guy and good stuff/prices.

Good luck

A well maintained J65 setup with good tires and pads is more than adequate for street use and shouldn't fade from one heavy application unless you are braking really hard from 80 or 90 mph.

Most of the people I know who road race with the 1LE setup say it is enough for the car.

Thats true enough. I still prefer my 1LE brakes on my Players car over the C5 brakes on my 87. Where the big dia brakes really shine is at hwy speeds. A light touch on my brakes now and it hauls down fast and easy. The stock J65's would do it but I had to push on em to get it done quickly. I tried numerous pad types on those old brakes and aside from bad dust I really liked those Carbon Metallic pads they used to have. I believe Wagner bought them out and called them dura stop afterwards iirc but I could be a ways off base with that one LOL getting older and certainly not any smarter

Is that because they stop better or other reasons as well ?

For a long time I was gonna put some kind of bigass brakes on the front then I started hearing people say that 1LE was OK - only thing I don't like so much about them is having to change the hub and rotor all at once which is a bit of PIA at the track if you don't have much time but o/wise they'd be OK - maybe add some ducting for the shorter tracks.

I do not have a 3rd Gen but did own 2. I would say pads and SS lines will amaze you at the improvement.

On my car I have Carbotech AX6 pads with SS brake lines and they haul the car down big time. These pads do dust and squeal, but the dust cleans off very easy and has left no marks on my rims. I use Motul RBF600, but that is only to help fade.

Those two things and I assure you will be impressed.

Don't encourage him...he's enough of bastard as it is.

Stainless lines will definitely help. I changed all my lines to stainless.....we'll bought all the parts to change them....eventually. :D

Yeah, SS lines make a very noticeable improvement and pads as well.

Dale, years ago I took JohnB for a run around a fairly long autocross course once to help him learn it and at the end of the fast straight I really stood on the brakes late - I guess he wasn't expecting it because his arms went up from the deceleration and he went flying forward - later I saw him looking under the front of my car expecting to find something more than the J65...lol

LOL, people can be surprised at what pads can do. The SS lines just make it happen, "Right Now!" My pedal I bet can not be pressed more than 3/8"-1/2". It is like pressing on the floor. So you have no delay while you travel the typical 3"-4" in some cases more. My Magnum is terrible how far the pedal moves before the bite hits.

The autocross pads I have, give a ton of bite cold. I have yet to fade them but that will likely happen this year with some track days.
