Post 85 iroc L69 4bbl fuel pump in tank ?
ive read a few posts talking about there being a helper pump in the fuel tank on some carborated models. Can someone confirm my car should have one as well ? I have the mechanical pump and have never changed a fuel filter anywhere but on the carb. figure i should start looking for a filter under the car if it has one.

It should have a fuel filter right before the rear axle on the drivers side. Follow the fuel line to the back of the car and you'll eventually find it. For there being a "helper" pump in the tank on a carbed car, I don't know. Maybe one of our guys will chime in soon...

Take the line off the carb from the filter inlet, put the line into a catch can or bottle. Turn the key to "on" position for 10 seconds then shut it off. Check the bottle if fuel came out. I doubt there's an electric pump there since you will need a regulator to lower the pressure. Another way is to trace the fuel line all the way to the tank and see if you have a regulator somewhere. The filter for EFI cars are under the driver side rear seat.

Thats only on EFI cars.

All factory carb'd 3rd gens have just a 3/8's feed line and a 5/16's return from the tank straight to the mechanical pump on the passenger side of the engine.

I've never before heard of a factory carb'd 3rd gen having a electric 'helper' pump. It would completely defeat the purpose of having a mechanical pump on the engine i would think AND it would also then need to be an internally regulated pump...I dont see that happening in the early to mid 1980's :P

There's a build I'm following on TGO where the owner mentions that.

The build I'm following is of an '84 Trans Am.

http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/power ... 5-a-7.html

From post #336 "Gonna tackle the intank fuel assembly tomorrow, as even though I have an external pump, what some of you guys may not know is that the L69's, although carbed and run a mechanical fuel pump, actually have an additional intank fuel pump to help with vapor lock. So long story short, that stock electric pump needs to come out. Fun fun, lemme tell ya lol.... "

Looks like I was wrong.

The helper pump was installed as a TSB recall to help solve vapor lock as previously mentioned and only on SOME L69 equipped 3rd gens.

Apparently ALL 1987 carb'd 3rd gens used this dual pump setup. Some even got a blower fan to help cool down the carb :|

Pretty crazy if you ask me lol.

thanks for all the input guys. from all the answers ive received the best course of action would be to get it out of the garage and test for electric pump as stated in other posts.

be alot easier to check the plug from under the car and see how many wires go to it...a pump needs more wires, if theirs only the guage wiring then you will have no pump...unless its solar wireless :)
