Bang for the buck for a used set I would say Sporstman 2 heads even better if fully ported.

Fully ported ive seen good numbers......on the internet.

But having said that, ive had sportsman 2 heads before, 200cc, 64cc 2.02/1.6 valves on a 10:1 355 with a Crane energizer cam 215/218 @ .050 and .440/.480 lift and shorty headers, sportsman 2 intake and the thing put down 275rwhp 325rwtq...stock heads. I dont know if id say thats good but it wasnt great. Ran 13.9 @ 101mph like that..

My LT1 cost me less then what a set of Sportsman 2 heads go for and makes 125+ rwhp MORE then what that 355 setup did.

Bang for buck, RHS or Patriot's in my opinion.

Sportsmans were good in the 80's. Even the Vortecs work better than Sportsmans

Vizard's books are great but the parts and technology he mentions arepossibly outdated. Emission standards and fuel quality has changed as well. I have some of his books on BBC. What was "streetable" and "bang for the buck" then might not be the same now.

[quote="Daz"]Im not talking about new or used. Im talking about the choices in aftermarket. Dont get stuck with one or two brands.I wouldnt get the a Pro Comp or the like but the Patriot heads are pretty good IMO. Buying an expensive head and thinking that it doesnt need to be checked is dangerous. A lot could happen in mass production(and transport). You would still need to get it checked by a reputable shop for tolerances etc.

Here is an example.

Daz is right no matter what you buy either buy them from a shop that checks them over and makes sure that they truly are ready to go or take them somewhere and have the checked before you bolt them on ( quality control doesn't exist anymore)

Horsepower are still horsepower and the number Vizard is getting are far from outdated even today I guess that's where the difference between an engine assembler and builder makes all sence! On top of that lot of guys ran in the 10's with those heads.

Check out the LATEST edition of Vizards Budget building SBC book. There are pages and pages of changes and updates.
He's way past working on the old OEM castings and heavily promots EQ Lightning, RHS and Dart. These are all iron heads.
I've just purchased possibly the LAST set of RHS Pro Torker 170cc Vortec heads (since discontinued). I've upgrded to a Comp 26918 spring and also have 1.6 full roller rockers.
What I can say is that compared to my old OEM Vortec heads, these things are superior.
