Post Rear axle bearing choice
I'll probably be spec'ing a new rear axle assembly soon.
Here's a question. Tapered roller bearing or sealed ball bearing for an all around application? There'll be more road miles (and possibly road course or autocross) than drag racing or plain cruising. But certainly both.
What the best choice and why? Sources? Articles?

Assuming a non c-clip axle..

Would the sealed ball bearing even have sufficient side load capability?
They typically don't have much.

My thinking too although the ball bearing is supported on both sides, certainly enough to give it enough durability for some street duty. At least I would hope so.
And yes...definitely a non c-clip application.

What are the road racers of CCFBG using?

Taper bearings are a one shot deal. Install them and never worry again. Not a fan of the cheap roller bearings myself. They fail fairly often and are leak prone.

I appreciate your reply considering from what I know, you're a road racer. (At least from your Avatar and your postings).
Yes, that's my understanding. I can't see how a plain roller bearing could handle the side loads as compared to a tapered bearing. My associates are mostly straight line guys and they're all up in arms regarding my (potential) choice.
Thanks for the input.
Soon it'll be time to open a discussion on choice of limited slip differential (I have have a hard time using the term LSD!)

Same here. Thanks for the input just the same. Seeing the Players car in your signature had me a little confused. You know...old age creeping up on me.
