Post Daily driver is dead
Hey all,
Yesterday my daily driver just died, not sure why. The car just stopped running. Now, when I try and start it, the starter engages and then just spins the rotating assembly, but there is nothing, no spark no gas, doesn't even attempt to fire. I know the engine isn't broke, as I looked through the oil filler and saw the valves moving, the engine gets pressure built up and then pops back though the plenum. I tried to get a reading for any codes with my scan tool and it keeps saying Error. I was told it could be four things, fuel pump, crank sensor. cam sensor or ECM. The car is a 2000 Chrysler Concorde w a 2.7 L auto. Any thought as to where the problem is before I start spending money on things it isn't the problem?
Thanks in advance.

From the articles

Chrysler / Dodge 2.7L Engine Problems

From 1998-2000 2.7L Engines are prone to premature catastrophic engine failure due to a defectively designed Timing Chain Tensioner that Chrysler quietly redesigned. Unfortunately, many consumers have had to pay out of their own pockets for this while Chrysler avoids responsibility

Thanks for the great reading LOL Makes me feel good I bought a CRYsler...I know that the engine had a complete rebuild before I bought it in 2008. It was rebuilt in 2006, I know, as the previous owner gave all the receipts for the car. Anyhow, if it was an internal failure, I don't think the engine would spin at all, would it? Seems like it would atleast try to fire as I cranked it over. Correct me if I'm wrong...

The fact that your scan tool plugged into the OBD2 port returns an error makes me think the ECU is fried. The car doesnt need to be running for a scanner to read the computer, the key just has to be in the ON position.

Id start there, because if the ECU is fried, you never will get spark or fuel (which i assume you ACTUALLY checked for??). Do you hear the fuel pump prime?

Yes, I checked for spark and have none. The fuel pump primes everytime. I would assume if it was the crank or cam positioning sensors, I would get a code thrown. I borrowed a friends scan tool as well, just in case mine proved to be faulty. His showed no codes as well. I know for a fact that my O2 sensor is faulty and that code should show for sure. Which leads me back to the ECM. Now to see if I can find one at a wreckers. Partsource wants $269 for a new one...

if it sounds funny cranking shes f**ked, if the cams aren't turning she won't start. The one i bought off a dude here had an exploded 2.7. Moms been driving it for years with very little trouble with the 3.5 ho we stuffed in it. Do a compression test, if it doesn't have any , scrap er!

Well, as far as i know, when I looked in the oil filler hole, I can see the valve springs moving, which would indicate that the internals are still together, atleast on the drivers side anyhow. It doesn't sound funny when I crank it, just hear the starter engage and then if I keep trying to crank it, pressure is building up and then pops back through the plenum. Anyhow, I found an ECM for it at the Cambridge wreckers for $75. I guess we will soon find out either way.

Anti theft won't allow it to start with the used pcm because your key code won't match. Popping back sounds like the chain jumped and its out of time.

I don't have an anti theft in the car. Still doesn't explain the lack of codes coming from the ECM. I have always had the O2 Sensor code with the check engine light on, now it doesn't throw any codes and the light goes out. I guess I will have to check it all out.... :?

I checked and the key anti theft was optional that year. Is your key with a black plastic head or grey rubber?

I'm pretty sure there's only one cam sensor on those engines and 4 cams so that seems very likley to me.
