Post Engine overheating
Hello folks. My car started to overheat today in traffic. Luckily I made it home. 1996 stock LT1.

1) Rad is clear of debri
2) Rad is full of anti-freeze
3) Both cooling fans are working perfect
4) Can't hear any vacuum leaks (idle is normal)
5) No anti-freeze leaks from the water pump or engine

I let it cool off for a few hours. Took it for another short test run and the temp just keeps climbing once she starts. Overheats straight to the top of the gauge within 10 minutes. Driving 100 kph on the highway and she still won't cool down.

I'm thinking that it's a stuck thermostat?

Suggestions please?

Thanks in advance,
Ken

Ya i'd start with a new thermostat. Might as well flush it out and replace with fresh coolant. If you've never done this you might want to inspect the opti spark for corrosion at the terminals and especially under the cap. Spray liberally with WD40, often, all over the thing inside out etc. Dielectric grease on the terminals. Those optis can be a pita if they start corroding

Yeah I would be looking for a stuck thermostat. At least they are easy to do on the LT1!

The Red Acorn is back to normal and runs as cool as a fudgesicle. Skrat is happy again... As my wife would say.

The strange thing is the car overheated coming back from checking out the Montreal Deli for the first time. Things that make you go "hmm".

Cheers,
Ken

A rad cap not holding pressure can also cause this since you checked all the usual culprits.

Did it end up being the thermostat? Just curious...I have a friend with an LT1 who's been experiencing the same stuff.

Yes it was 100% the thermostat. It runs perfect again... Well, let's just say it runs as perfect as it did before the overheating.
