Been thinking about this a lot lately. The problem is that I haven't heard of anyone successfully doing it with a 3rd gen. I'd LOVE to do it with my car as I'd hate to get rid of it - but I've heard that the 3rd gen. t-top cars have a different chassis! Gahhh

Heard anything in re. to doing this on a 3rd gen?

The chassis is too flimsy, unless you add subframes and a cage.

The L98 used to twist it apart thats why they only offered a 305 with T's.

There were T-Tops available with the 350s on 87 GTAs from the factory,
88s Canadian/export only with the 350s and a few 89s canadian/export only came with the t-tops. It had something to do with the safety regulations in the US but I don't know the details. I can find them over on another site though.

www.gtasourcepage.com will have it buried in the archives somewhere...

They made a few in 87 but quickly stopped production of L98 T's when a few got twisted up.

Subframe connectors fix this?

You'd need a donor shell and someone who knew how to brace the car properly when they cut the roof off of your car to do the swap.

I've already got frame connectors in there and know of a shop that could probably pull it off.

The question here is still: Is it possible?

It's possible if you get all the parts. My car started life as a hardtop and didn't get t tops untill 1996. Mine are aftermarket tho.

PMD saw the problems with that, but they caved to public pressure and still installed it.

89 TTA had higher numbers than the 350 and it came with t-tops
in 92 the formula 350 could get t-tops, though you had to order the diamond spoke 16" wheels in order to get it.

They stopped all T-tops and 350s for the 91 model year on all model firebirds.

Yesum I have a factory L98 G92 87 Iroc with T's in my back yard, 350's with t's in the later years came without the G92 option

I think they canceled the G92/T-roof combo alltogether at some point even with 305's

Okay, so there IS hope out there. Perfect! :) You wouldn't happen to have diagrams or a DIY instruction manual of any kind, would you? Perhaps a direction you could point me in?

too much torque heh :) My car has stress cracks where the roof meets the sail panel but this was before I put SFCs in.

I have seen a website where if you wanted to get t-roofs, they cut the roof off a donor car at the sail panel weld and about 3-4 inches down the a-pillar. It was a knight rider conversion store in the US, but I dont think they are in business anymore. There are some pics of entire build ups on Thirdgen.org as well, and they all used bracing when they did the roof off swap.

Some of the pics they show welding a crossbar temporarily in the door openings to prevent the car folding up like a taco when they cut the roof off because of all the weight of the extras.

I'm sure if the car was stripped of anything heavy (drivetrain etc) it wouldn't require as much if any bracing while doing the conversion. Would probably have to support it off the wheel as well.

My friend who had an 88 IROC had C&C style T-tops put in by a company in Toronto by a previous owner, cost 3300 bucks is what he told me. I don't have the details, but I can ask if he still has the paperwork for it.

Couple people on Thirdgen.org also have roofs for sale, or the C&C kit that was completely drilled out and cleanly removed too. They want a lot of money for it though and this was a while ago. It's something i've always wanted on my T/As.
