Post Speaker vibrations... with fix
I replaced my front speakers a few months ago and have finally enjoyed having front speakers and actual audible audio now. The other day a song with some mild bass came on and I heard the dreaded bass rattle which is the death knell of the 4th gen front speakers.

If you have the stock speakers for most 4th gens, they get wrecked by the stock deck quite easily with as much as a pin drop. I thought to myself, I've got some decent speakers in there now... can't be bad already.

I took off the door panel and inspected the speaker. Looked great, played some music with bass. Sounded great. I was like WTF? I unmounted the speaker while connected and heard rattle while a song was playing. The rattle, while the reason was the speaker in my hand, was not rattling from the speaker. Turns out the door sills were rattling at particular bass frequencies. The cheap plastic GM door sills were quite bass sensitive as a variety of low frequencies caused them to vibrate. Since they are just snapped in, I put some thin double sided tape to hold them on, just a few pieces in the corners and the middle, enough to hold it and dampen vibration, but not enough to give grief when wanting to remove.

Rattle be gone. Quick fix for anyone hearing that odd rattle for some songs. Also, its VERY dirty underneath, good time to clean there.

It's funny you brought this up. My passenger side speaker has developed the bass rattle. They are the stock speakers as far as I know.
Do you really have to remove the inside door panel to get at it? Is it hard to do?

It takes me around 5 mins to take off. maybe 15 the first time. You can snag clarion 6.5 for 50 usd. Its held on with screws for the panel and 7mm for the speaker pod.

Cool...thanks for the tips.
I assume its wise to upgrade both sides? My drivers side window panel (black trim that runs along the bottom of the window) is off its clips, so I need to get on this before the snow anyways.

lol, sure it's easy to get off.....I've never been very fond of getting these things back on.....Especially that stupid door lock slider!

I got a set of Pioneer 6.5's on sale at CTC a few years ago....think they were $75 or so. They installed pretty easily in the Firebird

Most 6.5's will install very easily into 4th gens, if it doesn't usually comes with an adapter that can be used.... And actually with all new speaker installs that i've done personally, I buy the cheapo, truck bedliner from crappy tire, its 6.99 i think for a can, and spray the metal around the speaker, and on the back side of the edges of plastic peices and never had a problem with the rattles. and doubles as a sound deadener. without having going to dynamat or anything of that sort.

Going to be installing some new jbl 6.5s in my doors this week and was thinkin about adding in some thin cardboard in behind the plastic holder to dampen some rattle? Thoughts or is double sided tape a better solution?
