Post Re: Back in a Formula Again
With a good month and a half at least until I even think about getting the car back out for the spring, I decided to tackle something else that's been bugging me for quite some time.

2 summers ago when I swapped motors, I was repositioning the car to place it in a better position on my hoist. I completely forgot the extension pipe was dangling down & naturally it hooked on a lip in the concrete floor and completely crunched the over axle pipe.

Now I hadn't even heard the new motor run yet at this point, so I didn't really want to dump a bunch of $$ into a new exhaust pipe to only find out the motor had issues etc, so I just grabbed some couplers to patch in a piece of pipe I had in the shed to replace the crunched piece. It was at this point I discovered my welder was having issues with the wire feed...........as a result I wound up with a repair that looked like it was done by students on day 1 of grade 9 shop class!

Image146793029_329850545000831_7866786990512650926_n by Hewitt Shane, on Flickr

It was ugly & leaked in a few spots, but it got the job done so I could move on to getting the new motor running, tuned etc.

The other part of this exhaust system that has always annoyed me is that the entire system from the y pipe back is completely slip fit joints & clamps. This setup is fine..........if you never have to remove it. Unfortunately the exhaust has to come down on these cars for things like the fuel pump. I'm sure many of you know all too well what a pain in the rectum it is trying to take an exhaust off that is all clamped without destroying it.

So part 1 of this project was to go back and fix the weld job on the patch and at the very least make it leak free.........in the best case scenario maybe make it look a little less amateur!

Part 2 of this project will be welding new flanges on where the over axle pipe joins to the muffler & to the extension pipe so that going forward if the exhaust has to come down for any reason, I can just unbolt it without damaging anything.

While I'm waiting on my flanges to arrive, I got going on part 1 of the project which went much better now that the wire feed issue my welder had has been fixed.

I'm pretty confident the repair should be leak free now, & doesn't look nearly as bad as it did!

Flanges should arrive later this week, so hopefully I can put some time in on part 2 next weekend.

As another note of interest, this car may wind up being for sale at some point this spring/summer.

This car has been, and continues to be absolute boat loads of fun. Ultimately if I had more garage/driveway space I would keep it. Unfortunately I only have room for 1 toy though.

After decades of raising kids, putting them through university/college, paying mortgages etc, my wife and I are finally in the position I can pull the trigger on the car I've wanted for some time. The kids are grown and gone, the mortgage is gone...........I plan on a brand new Camaro 1SS 1LE being in my life this summer.

Black would be my preferred color, but the red is a close second.

So while I may part ways with my Firebird, I'll still be remaining in the F-body family!

Perhaps a new thread on the new car is in order whenever that happens! (Although I really can't imagine modifying much on it.......it seems to be a REALLY well sorted out car!)

With that in mind, if anyone has any interest in the Formula, feel free to message me.

Moved on to part 2 of the exhaust project last weekend.

Got the flange welded onto the muffler.

Welded the corresponding flange onto the over the axle pipe.

Now the entire muffler and tailpipe assembly can be removed just by undoing 3 bolts & a couple hangers, should the need arise again.

Thats a sweet little trick. Man I wish I had more garage space if you decided to put her up for sale.

Assuming all goes well, the for sale post will likely show up Monday.

I have an appointment to go see this car Monday afternoon.

Its gonna seem like forever till the roads clear up enough that I can go bring it home from the dealer's showroom! Lol!

So once the Formula sells, this thread will be coming to an end.

Being pretty nice when I got home from work this afternoon, I pulled the cover off the old girl and backed it up to a flat/level spot of my garage to verify the alignment. Amazingly both camber and toe seem to be spot on. That's a relief. I had visions of having to spend hours straightening things back out after all the work that was done over the winter.

Once that was complete, I backed the car right out to give it a good wipe down and have a look at the new stance.

It is sitting a LOT lower than it did. I like it.

Congrats on the new car!
It’s been great reading through this thread and seeing your passion for your car.
I’ve just gotten back into the hobby after deciding to get my 1996 back on the road. It’s been sitting for 6 years and I have a list of stuff to get it roadworthy again.

I have 2 kids; a 3 year old and a 1 year old.
Also, my wife is a nurse doing shift work, so my progress will be painfully slow. I might get to work on it ever other week if I’m lucky
