Imagine a tire that grips when its wet or dry almost the same. Imagine something that can handle turns better than anything currently out there.

Discuss.

Why not Michelin Pilots?

Every major race team has them on their cars, every major performance car has them as the factory tire or optional upgrade.

They are a bit pricey.

Funny you mentioned those as these tires are cheaper and out handle them both. Vette owners who have used both the PS2 or Toyo's and have tried the sessanta have sworn a significant improvement.

There was also a car and driver article that tested the top 8 UHP level tires. It was beat in only 1 section, braking, and even then the braking distances mentioned are <1 m difference.

My old set up worked very well, though not sure you can buy them any more. Nitto 555RII 275/40-17 and on the rear Nitto 555R 315/35-17. It handled extremely well in the dry, and was impressive in the dry.

I have not read of the Vredestein being anything but a descent around tire, but not an extreme performance tire. A lot of the LX guys like them, but for the better ride and descent handling. If you want real performance tire, look for an R compound like above. The Nitto NT-05s are supposed to be very good. I am considering switching to them on the front and I already have 315 NT-05Rs for the rear.

What sizes are you wanting to go with? I might be selling my front Nitto 555RIIs. I see they no longer make this size.

I have Toyo R888s already as well, very sticky in the dry, but easily planed in standing water, then again I had 4 315s on it.

On my Magnum, I have been pretty happy with the Nitto Invos in the dry and wet. They get good reviews from the Vette guys.

lol @vette owners...

Grooved/sipped R1 compound tires are proven to be great in the rain as well as dry racing. The problem is the longevity.

Ill take the racers word first but thats just me

I did mention they are on my 4200lb Magnum right? I was just using it for comparison to the Vredestein, as they are the only group I have ever seen really liking this tire. The INVOs on the other hand seem to be pretty popular on Z06s. Though I would still never consider them for my Formula.

A list of tires I personally have used on the Firebird. (110,000kms)

Goodyear F1 Steels - trash tire - terrible in the rain (stock power)
Firestone SV50-EP - 2 sets, loved this tire - awesome in the rain too, a shame it is gone(stock power)
Kuhmo V710 - 2 sets, great for autocross, short runs on track, can be rain driven slowly on a 275, but 315s no way (430rwhp and 511rwhp)
Nitto 555RII - used for a front street tire, R Compound, rain is no problem (511rwhp and 533rwhp)
Nitto 555R - used as a rear street tire, 2 sets, rain is no problem, (511rwhp and 533rwhp)
Mickey Thompson DRII - used as street tire with the Nittos in front, hated this tire, as they squirmed. Never drove them in the rain and doubt they would be ok.(533rwhp)
Toyo R888s - not a bad tire, not meant for rain but I did win an autocross in the rain with them on, drove home on them and they planed through a puddle on the QEW at 80kms. (533rwhp)
Nitto NT-05R - for a rear street tire. Should be over 600rwhp, untested

Plus various drag tire set ups, but they do not apply.

On the Magnums (220,000kms):
Goodyear F1 Supercars - 2 sets, not a bad tire dry or wet. (340hp and 425hp)
Toyo Proxes 4 - hated the tire, poor in dry and rain (340hp)
Hankook Ventus Evo 112k - great tire wet or dry, a little soft in the sidewall (340hp)
Nitto INVOs - impressed so far, not a lot of forward bite in the rain. (425hp)

For real input of high grip tires try, (F Body Road Race and Auto Cross) FRRAX.com, the guys there actually race the cars and use timing systems to see the difference. FYI, there is a Watts link tuning thread ongoing on there right now.

The vette guys I mention that like this seem to be heavy into autocross and drag too. So its not really the typical vette guys you see around here in TO and Ontario in general. The tires are street tires first, but very good street tires and no hydroplaning issues and longevity problems that the ones above were mentioned. I just wish they made my KD tires, even in last weekend's nasty downpours at 7 years old and at the wear indicators, the KD's only started hydroplaning at 110km/h and even then it wasn't like it was bad, I just felt it not cut as well through the standing water.

Also not looking into racing compounds. I daily drive this car so I would like tire life beyond a summer season.

The INVO looks like it would plane, but nothing to date and some pretty heavy rain at hwy speeds.

I think the closest you will find for your requirements would be NT-05s, not the NT-05Rs that I have. They have a treadware of 200, but do not have a very deep tread, which is part of the reason they work so well. Lonegevity, maybe 20-25k tops. Depends how you drive them.
