Thought I'd throw a little thread up here on what I'm up to with my car. I got started on it 6 or 7 years ago, then moved out of my old mans house and progress stopped as I didn't have anywhere to work on it nor could I afford it. Now I'm back at it! I plan on having it mechanically done this summer, then over the winter get it in to the body shop for repaint. Its a 383 stroker with a set of ported trickflow heads. Its a full roller motor. I'm using a 700r4 that has been built using the pro street kit from pro-built transmissions. All the usual suspension stuff, still don't have my shocks/ struts picked out yet though. Newest addition is a moser 9" rear I picked up from Jay.

Now for a question. What does everyone use to prep the head and block surfaces? The heads and block have been machined, but I was using the wrong gaskets+ wrong torque specs so they didn't seal properly. Now I need to do minor cleanup on both surfaces and am not sure of whats best to use?

A flapper wheel on a cordless drill would probably work.

Use the highest grit you can find.

BTW nice ride you will have to get it out to the track when its done 8)

I like to spray the block deck and head face with wd40 and let it soak in an hour or so, then i go to town with them with a wire wheel on a drill. If the block and heads are aluminum dont get to aggressive with it..take your time.

After its all clean, I always wipe them down with a dry cloth, then i grab a rag and some laquer thinner and clean both surfaces rightttt up.

Do NOT add any sealer to the head gasket. Get yourself some FelPro 7733PT2 head gaskets and ARP head bolts. Make sure you put a copious amount of Thread Sealer on the threads of the head bolts and make sure you use the the ARP moly lube all over the head and washer of each bolt. If you dont have ARP bolts or ARP moly lube, make sure you use engine oil on the bolts and washers.

Torque the heads in 3 stages. 1st stage at 30ft lbs, 2nd stage at 50ft lbs and 3rd and final stage at 65ft lbs. If using engine oil instead of moly lube increase the torque to 35, 55 then 70ft lbs also in 3 stages.

It looks like your block is already assembled..I wouldn't go near it with an abrasive or wire wheel to clean the surface, just use a razob blade.
Small particles from both the abrasive and the block will inevitably end up in the oil, then the bearings.

I'm thinking I might tape of the block and just lightly hit the odd spot with a wire wheel. I hear what your saying about particles but it's almost a double edged sword! I already have arp head bolts and the gaskets come in tommorow 8)
