Post 84 Z28 LS Swap
Picked up this car last fall as a roller. So far I have got an L96 6.0L paired to a 4l80e. Going to install a Texas Speed vvt cam and Hedman Husler headers. Car will be primarily a track car but will be licensed. Hope to have it on the road in a couple of months.

Car is unbelievably clean, no rust and every bolt loosens without snapping off, a joy to work on.

I will update as work progresses.

I saw this car for sale last year and couldnt believe how cheap it was selling...good pick up.

Any reason you're going with hustler headers? I didnt realize they made them for an LS swapped 3rd gen. I cant imagine that being "fun" to have to work on having 4 primary tubes sitting inline. Apparently you cant even take the starter off with those things on.

Good choice on keeping VVT on the L96. Check out the VVT cams that GPi is making. They're producing the best results so far in terms of fastest VVT LSx stuff. Rhino79 REALLY knows his shit.

Nice project, starting with a clean solid car is super wise. Makes everything so much easier and better. Have fun wrenching!

Had to pick somebody's headers and they had a 1 3/4 stepped to 1 7/8 which I wanted. I think they did the inline for ground clearance and I have taken the starter on and off with them installed so that is not correct.

I'll check out Rhino79.

Maybe they redesigned the primnary tube locations then...i do remember when they first came out, the hustlers blocked a lot of stuff underneath.

Either way, awesome setup.

Post Re: 84 Z28 LS Swap
I spent a lot of time on carpart.com looking for the lowest mileage engine and trans. This is the L96 6.0 out of a 2010 Silverado, only 7k on motor, cost me $1850.

Image

I went with the 4L80E because of the availability of upgrades ie converter, valve bodies etc.
4L80E out of an 08 Savanna, 12k on it, cost $950.

My Son shamed me into cleaning it up and painting it.

Nice parts. You'll probably find as the miles increase, so does the performance. Mine get faster every year as they loosen up lol. Have you picked out engine management yet? Whats your plan there? Transmission control?

Post Re: 84 Z28 LS Swap
Just got HPTuner Pro and planning on controlling the trans through it. My base tune is from an 08 Savanna which was mated with the 4L80E so I am hoping I can get it controlled that way. I have spent some time on the HPTuners forum and it seems I should be ok but time will tell. This way at least I don't have to segment swap.

If I run into serious difficulties I will look at a standalone controller.

Post Re: 84 Z28 LS Swap
Cam I have a friend with an 87 IROC with the LZ9 V6 stock bottom end with just a cam, TH350 and home built turbo setup. That thing screams, he has run a best of 6.8 in the 1/8th but hasn't hit the 1/4 yet. We race mostly in North Bay. He was the one that got me into wanting a 3rd gen and was going to duplicate his setup until I started looking into the LS swap and here I am.

I have been into the racing scene for quite a while but always imports. (not a Honda) Ran a V6 Maxima with a cam and nitrous with a best of 10.86@125. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0Rj76q5Vyw

Last year I ran a G35 coupe but my best was was a low 13 so I decided to try something completely different but this is turning out to be more of a challenge than I expected. Just had my 67th birthday last weekend so I do have lots of time and I work pretty slow but I am having fun so I just keep plugging away.

Well I may be a tad biased here, but I think you've made an excellent choice for some serious go fast fun with the LSx platform 8)

It is a fair bit of work to build a car of this nature but it is heaps of fun too. If you get into any jams or need some direction by all means ask away and I'll do my best to help you out. North Bay is one of my favorite places, I have a lot of great memories up there. Good people

Post Re: 84 Z28 LS Swap
I must admit a lot of the work was done when I bought the car ie Strange rear end, drag suspension, steering box etc but there is a lot left to do. I put in all new steering linkage, brake lines, fuel pump in tank, new lines, wiring etc, even have to install new seats, seat belts. Like you said its a lot of work but I'm retired so its my full time job and I can do it until I'm tired or run out of ideas and then return when I feel inspired. However it is fun to see each step completed and looking ahead to the next.

Thank you for your offer for help, I will do that for sure. I spend a lot of time on various forums and googling but sometimes the answers still don't come so its nice to have someone to set me straight. This is a totally new platform for me and sometimes its overwhelming but I keep looking towards the end when I can finally turn the key and it actually starts and nothing leaks.

Post Re: 84 Z28 LS Swap
Installed one of Jake's valve bodies and did a few internal mods to allow better flow, should be good for 750 hp now. Also installed a Revmax stage 5, 4k stall converter. The 4l80e was a little intimidating to pull apart. My previous experience was installing a couple of transgo vb kits. However the shop manual and a bunch of youtube video's later it is back together and (fingers crossed) hopefully will work as advertised. The converter was a lot easier, clearances were fine and it spins easy. I did have to get a new flexplate with spacer to mate with the trans.

Haven't really looked to see what kind of rpm it will do at highway speeds with the 4:10 but hoping it won't be too high. It won't see a lot of highway use, mostly around town and tuning. We are looking at getting another small motorhome and I have a dolly I used for my previous car to tow to the track.

Opened up the diff to change fluid and check its condition. Also got new a 3 1/2" aluminum drive shaft with 1350 u-joints.
