Post Re: Back in a Formula Again
Well after putting 4000 glorious km's on her in my first summer with the car, Nov 1 it was officially parked for the winter.

Decided to put it up on the hoist and give it a once over to see if anything needs attention over the winter.....all seems well!

I have been following your thread and you have done an excellent job bringing this old girl back to life. I was wondering if you can document the cam swap as I was always curious on what was involved in getting that done.

Thanks

Benny

No problem.

Its going to take me quite a bit longer to do as I plan on cleaning. degreasing, refinishing stuff as I go along too (that's why I elected to do this as a winter project rather than just go at it for a weekend), but I'll certainly keep the updates coming.

Got a start on my cam swap project today!

Imagereceived_10156437503815556 by Shane Hewitt, on Flickr

After removing the air intake, serpentine belt, both rad fans, the rad & water pump, I did some degreasing & cleaning.

I was pleased to find no rust in the rad cradle!

That's all the energy I had .....battling a wicked cold. Put my tools away and had a nap!

Post Re: Back in a Formula Again
Felt pretty good yesterday so spent a few hours plugging away.

First issue I knew I was going to have to deal with was the plugs. The factory ACDelco's that were in it are too long to get a socket on #5 & #6 with the new headers on.......so they weren't coming out in one piece.

Imagereceived_10156455381655556 by Shane Hewitt, on Flickr

A set of Accel shorty plugs are on my shopping list when I order everything I need to start putting it back together. That should solve that problem.

After that minor annoyance I made pretty good progress.

Imagereceived_10156455644580556 by Shane Hewitt, on Flickr

Plugs & wires out, distributor out, intake manifold off (again), valve covers off.......wound up with a pretty good pile of parts when I decided to call it a day!

Assuming everything goes as smoothly as it has so far, another hour or two should have the OE cam out.......then time to order some parts!!!

I'd look around for accel shorty alternatives as they are expensive. I think autolites are the same length and cost about $2 each..

I'm open to suggestions. ....part number?

For what it's worth the Accel's were $29 for 8 on Summit where I'm ordering a bunch of stuff from and also have a 20% off discount code....

Post Re: Back in a Formula Again
Had a few free hours today so I went back at it.

Removed the crank pulley, pulled the harmonic balancer, pulled the timing cover & timing chain & gears. Off with the rocker arms, pushrods, spider & dogbones, then out with the lifters.

Then I had my "Oh shit!" moment. While taking out the bolts for he cam retainer plate, I dropped one & was positive it dropped into the oil pan! Noooooo!!!!

Luckily after fishing around with a magnet, out it came.....Thank God!

After twisting the AC condensor up out of the way.....out it came!

Now its time to sit down & order some parts & put it all back together again!

Well, cam is in. Lifters, pushrods, dog bones & spider are all in place as is the rad......now I'm at a standstill waiting for parts.

While I'm waiting on parts, its time to put some time in on some of the parts that will be going back on.

The timing cover is the first one to get dealt with......its not going back on the car looking like this!

It would be easy enough to throw it in the sandblast cabinet, but I'm paranoid about bits of that sand finding its way into the motor no matter how well I clean it, so out came the electrolysis tank again!

Imagereceived_10156464632025556 by Shane Hewitt, on Flickr

After a few hours things are looking much better! Think I'll leave it in overnight to clean it up real nice.

After cooking for 24 hrs I pulled the cover out.

Image20151120_161351 by Shane Hewitt, on Flickr

Cleaned up well!

A quick shot of paint & its completely different with a net cost of $0, and a total of about 10 mins of my time all totaled up.

Crank pulley is undergoing the same treatment currently.

Apparently my parts order has shipped, so hopefully I can start making some progress putting her back together this week!

So this little gem of a tool from Trick Flow has solved my spark plug dilemma.

The OE, standard length spark plugs that I have plenty of are easily installed and removed now! Well worth the $15!!
