Project - New/Old School
A few of you know me and that I am deep into a long drawn out project.
Since everyone was showing there toys. I thought I would show my progress. I might even be ready to attend a show or two in 2009.
I have always wanted to build my own motor. I think I got carried away.
Car as it was before going under the knife. The exterior look will not change much, but the interior and power train are ge a little overhaul.
What do I mean by old school? PMD? Tin Indian? 455?
What do I mean by 455? 4.190" bore by 4.125" stroke. 4.190" bore in an aluminum LSx needed Darton Sleeve in an LS7 block. Done by Race Engine Developements.
Heads are Trickflow 245cc CNC ported by Total Engine Airflow.
Assembled for the dyno break in with a carb.
Enroute to the dyno:
On the dyno:
On the dyno running:
http://videos.streetfire.net/video/455- ... f1fe4827b5
Soon to come is the real induction, a Harrop Individual Throttle Body intake:
Keeping it cool, Evans water pump, B Cool Rad, Spal fans, custom shroud, custom steam AN6 tubes:
A little weight reduction, K member, and 15 lb battery:
Interior mods, new seats, new carpet, and a new stereo:
Other than the above I am not doing much to the car.
The funny part is like mentioned above, it will not look much different and 1 year later.
Hoping to see 670ish on the dyno with the fuel injection in a couple week. We put little effort into the carb tuning since it was an unported intake and seemed to be to small of a carb with the 850 and would never be used in my car. Motor seems solid and is now broken in.
Come on spring 2009.

Wow! That is a slick set-up. Can't wait to see it at a show.

thats a nice curve on the dyno, it keeps the power and torque throughout the RPM range unlike some where all you see is a spike

Thanks, we had a weird thing going on with the top end of the pulls.
It made 618 at 5800 and never went below 613 all the way to 6600 and ended at 617 at 6600. On that pull it only peaked at 622. The power was dead flat for 800 rpm. We are not sure if we ran out of carburator or had to much timing in it.
With the Harrop intake it should flow a lot better and hopefully pull to the 6500-6800 rpm I expected the peak to be at.
It will also have a Big Stuff 3 computer running the show. My goal is to be emissions legal, but I expect to very close to the line and hopefully squeak out 570+ rwhp NA. I like my projects easy LOL.

woa nice build i like the 455 lsx theme, those old school guys wish they had the power and fuel economy out of those 70s as this. how did you make out with those gauge overlays and is he interested in making more?

We will see on the fuel enconomy, but the fuel injection and 6 speed should helps alot. My 412 would get 18-20 on the highway if I was really gentle.
As for the gauges I was very happy with them. Not cheap, but Ian is out of Niagara Falls and it was nice to deal with a Canadian product for once. The quality looks really nice. Until I have power I will not be installing them. These ones need you to pull the needles.
I had mine modified somewhat, no mph, 6500 redline and the logos. It is a silver textured surface to match my Autometer gauges. I forgot to add those to my interior mods list. Too much stuff going on with the this project. I forget half of what I have. There will be quite a bit for sale at the end of it. I know I owe you an AFR set up. It is still in the car.
Blackcat was great to deal with too. I would not hesitate recommending them.

Thanks.
I show it a little, but I really like to autocross it, take it t the strip, and hopefully this year a couple open track days too. I just like it to look good in the process.

Looks like someone blew their budget on an engine!
Did you start this engine before the LSX block came out? It'll go bigger than that without sleeves.

Nope it was out, but it only comes with a 225lb boat anchor weight attached to it. My car is expected to turn corners and very well. This block weighed in at a feather weight 94lbs. It took 2 of us to lift the fully dressed motor into the back of my car. This is a LS7 block with dowelled mains. I did know that LSx would go to 4.25 vs this ones 4.20.
It is nearly impossible to take that kind of weight of the nose of a street car that needs to turn corners.
They have been talking about an aluminum LSX but it still has not shown up and I bought this block over a year ago. The only reason I put the stereo in the car is the the extra 35lbs went in the back of the car. Even the sub box is fibreglass to save weight.
I also wanted to keep my AC and ABS.

94 pounds....hmmmmm i think my cam is almost that heavy :):)
so your not worried about it not shifting around being that light means it can't be beefed up anywhere.
