Post Drive clean-FAIL
Lucky me have an 88 Iroc 5.7 that cannot/will not pass the etest.
The car is well maintained with 91k on it.
First Failed doing nothing but an air filter change...that is all I ever did to prepare other than getting it hot in the past.
I have now done the following...the test results have improved but still failed Nox by 2 points.
Egr, fuel pump, oil change, oxygen sensors, retarded the timing, new free flow converter.
I am at a loss, in more ways than one $$$$$ tested 4 times since the first test, between doing the above.
Anyone been in my position? All sensible suggestions would be appreciated!

Please post the test results and limits,we will be able to help you better.

Think of emissions as a 3 legged stool,With HC,CO and NOX representing the legs.

If you change one it effects the others.

High NOX can be caused by abnormally high combustion temps or knock caused by carbon build up ect.

Yeah....post the results, or better yet a scan of the test so we can get an idea of exactly what is going on during the test.

2 points out on nox is VERY close considering we're talking ppm here....

Without seeing the test, I'd suspect the free flow cat.....I've seen those cause many otherwise perfectly running cars to fail....See if you can get your hands on a good quality, new, non-free flow cat that you can use for the test.

I was thinking that...but where would be the best place to get one? I would hang on to it if I passed...but if I fail again I would be stuck with it...not to mention the extra $ on top of what I spent.

You're failing by 2 points but a good running engine will be 1/4 the limit so really you are 4X what you should be. If the car is in your name you could get a conditional pass which maybe should have been done before spending all the $$ you did.

Ya well...what can u do....pay or keep the car in the garage as an ornament. :)
I actually have the results in hand since picking the car up
Out of five tests..yes five I am all over the place.

Best out of 5 is as follows
HC ppm limit 55 reading 21 pass
CO. Limit 0.31 reading 0.01 pass
NO PPM limit 612 reading 707 FAIL

That was after a free flow converter, o2 sensor, fuel pump, oil change
So then we continue on

EGR changed - FAIL again
HC ppm reading 74
Co reading 0.08
No ppm 1096

a conditional pass as u may know can only be obtained at an accredited drive clean facility. I personally do not know any that I would trust. If anyone does please let me know
At this point what would I do for $450 ?.?

Headers  J/K

I think setting the base timing back to stock with the tan wire disconnected would be a start.

Next get the FP set about 5psi higher to get the combustion chamber cooled down.

You have lots of room on the HC so getting it a little rich won't hurt you.

If your car has an aftermarket chip in the ECM get it out and get the stock one in.

I dont know if this will help but when I had my cavilier it fail cause a fan wasnt in front of it. Took it to a friend at his dealership. Keep in mind I have done nothing to it and a fan was run infront of it and it passed with flying colours. Dont know why but was told some cars need it infront of them. Odd I know but ill take it as it passed.

J-bodies tend to run hot during e-tests....I suspect it's the way the termostat for the e-fans is setup?

To the o.p....I am not sure where your located, but I can recommend a good honest accredited test only facility place in Mississauga....I worked as a tester for 4 years - technically I am still licensed, but I don't do testing anymore.

Flame, you're right a 'properly' running car should be about 1/4 (or even less) than the limit.....But I challenge you to find a TPI car that is testing with numbers like that! Any TPI that actually passes, is pretty impressive in itself.

Thats because most of them have a few crappy injectors which screws up the fueling on all the cylinders.

To the OP you say the EGR has been replaced but was it tested to see if it actually functions? If you open it manually at idle it should kill the motor. If it doesn't then the egr port in the intake is likely full of carbon thus no EGR flow actually making it into the motor.

Gotta love the drive clean program. Just paid my 35$ gov't tax for it today when I got my Vette done.

I have nothing much to add. I'm assuming you took it in hot off the road and didn't let it sit before the tests. I've had cars with Magnaflow bullte cats pass with no problems. Like others have said get the timing to factory spec, stock tune and working EGR.

BTW, my 04 Vette tested HC/CO as 0/0 @ 2500 & 2/0 at idle. LS1 FTW. :)

The tech did it as a two speed standing test, no rollers. He marked down "no safe place to strap" on the form. Don't know if the numbers would be worse on the rollers but I know that most places won't strap a Vette down. See if you can get a place that won't run the rollers (assuming they did on the other tests).
