Post 8.5 10 bolt in late model F-Body?
I heard at a local cruise in that GM made a pretty stout 10-bolt that ran in quite a few cars including the Impala SS powered by an LT1.

Anybody heard about these 8.5 10 bolts that can be made just as strong as a 12 bolt? I was pretty surprised that it can be done at quite the cost savings too.

You would spend more trying to make it fit then a 12 bolt would cost

Yup what Flame said.

There is no torque arm provision, the spring perches need to be welded on,rlca brackets.

Get a used Fbody aftermarket Dana 60,9" or 12 bolt if you want to save money.

Or talk to cam on the board and ask him about building you a 8.8 ford custom rear

FWIW the 8.5" 10 bolt and the 8.8 12bolt are almost the same rear. The pinion collar and bearing set is shared and the 12 bolt is 8.8" diam ring whereas the 8.5" is well.. you get it? Not much difference. The pinion offset is also identical so it really comes down to housing beef and axle splines that make the difference and car to car the housing change so its luck of the draw but regardless there is no good core 10 bolt ( or 12 bolt for that matter ) GM rear to start with that will accept a torque arm mount plus they simply are not as capable as the Ford 8.8 due to casting process, styles, and parts availability. The 8.5" came in many variations though theres the 8.2. 8.5 which a good load of came with 28 spline axles and then theres the gov't or whatever you want to call it 8.5" that came with 30 spline axles which is also what the 12 bolts came with in the Big old Chevless Impala SS etc. Either way you slice it a stock 12 bolt or 30 spline 8.5 10 bolt limits out around 12.0 in a 3500lb car and if your dead hooking you can break parts at that level on them

Where most people go sideways on info with differentials is what "some other guy" is running. You can take an 8.5" 10 bolt stuff a 35 spline spool in there, reinforce the housing and make for bolt in axles etc and go to deep 9's or better if the car is light enough. Mind you that set up is going to cost you serious bucks.

Think of diffs just like engines. A stock TPI 5.7L is still the same block that can make 500 h or 140 hp its not the "housing" = block in this case its the internals that make it special.

As for me making you an 8.8? Yeah that would be great if my tool and die friend wasnt goin off the rails chasing tail running away to foreign lands almost losing his mind while dealing with this divorce and get crackin on my parts.... Life happens but soon I HAVE to get these things cranked out this has been a rough summer for getting projects completed....

if you can convert it cheap enough they are tough as shit. ran 9s many years with bone stock internals, was putting well over 1000 hp through my 30 spline axled 8.5 on sat with eaton posi and she's fine and thats a 3600 lb car.
