According to Ed Welburn, GM's vice president for global design, the on-again, off-again Z28 is back in the plan. The modified body is done, according to Welburn. There is still calibration work to be completed on the powertrain, though. We're still looking at about a year's wait before the Z28 would appear.

The basic engine is a [b]6.2-liter supercharged V8
, which sees duty in the Cadillac CTS-V. In that application, the engine makes 556 horsepower and is available with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. There's no reason to assume that the Z28 wouldn't be offered with both transmissions, and only a fool would dial back the power.

The Z28 will come with a specific body kit with a slightly raised hood to accommodate the top-mounted intercooler/supercharger unit and a tall rear spoiler. Specific wheel design and suspension tune will surely be part of the package. Wider rear rubber might prove necessary, too, we'd think.

Just goes to show that for all its sensible talk of late, enthusiasm for performance vehicles still runs deep at GM. We're also hearing that GM is considering doing a higher-performance version of the V6 Camaro, in hopes of piquing the interest of less traditional Camaro enthusiasts.

Heres what you can expect 8) :

Interesting that they would make the Z28 faster than the SS. Kinda bakwards.

GM realizes there 2 trains of thought on that issue. personally I think they got it right. from 1967-1997 the Z28 was the most desireable with many years Z28 the top since there was no SS. the value of 1st and 2nd gen Z28s are higher than the SS cars when they both were in the line-up......... IMHO

I agree.

The Z28 started out as being a production car, showroom floor ready race car and was a lot more 'rare' in the 1st gens than an SS/RS.

It wasn't until 1996 when the 'SS' stigma came back, but this time as the top ranking model, and it stayed that way throughout the rest of the 4th gen years.

I'm liking the idea of this new Z28 8)

The SS vs Z28 debate has raged wildly for years (especially on camaroz28.com).

Just think of it this way:

The Camaro Z28 is to the SS what the Corvette ZR1 is to the Z06.

Realy? When it came to the 1st gen the way I saw it was if you wanted to go aruond corners fast, you got a Z28, if you wanted to go fast in a 1/4 mile you got a 396 SS. But reguardless, this car is going to be amazing no matter what badge is on the grill.

since we live in country where no one's opinion is wrong and the government doesn't put speed limiters on cars  no one ever accused a 396 for being fast  :D if I was lined up with a 340 Dart in a 396 Camaro I would like my chances much more it it was a 302 Zapper with 4:56 or 4:88 gears. same with a 350 LT1 Z28 and a 402 SS Camaro. the 402 was only 15 hp more than the 350 but a lot more iron where you don't want it.
I think the debate is fueled by the generation diiference of ppl :?: I was a kid completely engulfed in cars with older sisters boyfriends showing up in true daily driver muscle cars.SS cars were availible in every line Chevrolet offered. "Z28" TURNED HEADS :!: The production numbers were much less than 1/2 versus SS and they did'nt make good daily drivers . Solid lifters, only the best engine components, strictly 4 speed cars 1967-1970 inclusive and air conditioning not availible also. they were bad ass cars IMHO. I could buy 1st Gen cars for peanuts when I bought my first car no problem SS cars easier than a Zeeder 8)
In 1997 GM should have badged their cars as SS and stuck the Z28 badge on the SLP derived cars. but at the end of the day its a badge and the top of the line is always a "bitchin" ride.........bitchin' takin from American Graffeti 8)

you couldn't beat the other stand on this deabate into me :D Z28s rock and they got it right again

That is how it was...the Z28 was a production ready 'road-race' car with its tuned suspension & sway-bars, 4-wheel disc brakes, etc. It's 302ci SBC powerplant was always mocked for being mediocre at best for drag racing since it was a high-strung V8 for its time (lacked low-end torque compared to all other SBC's and BBC's) and only mustard' off high 14 second 1/4 mile times with a GOOD driver factory stock.

The SS396 was a better straight-line performer, but with its much inferior standard issue brakes and suspension, it was far less desirable for anything short of a nice cruiser or drag racer.
