305-350 swap
Hey guys,
Potential new member here. I'm looking into a one owner 85 Z28. If everything checks out, this will be my new project car. I'm a long time Grand Prix GTP owner and member of OQCGP.
I know there are a tonne of threads about this swap but I thought If I was more specific about my goals then a few of the seasoned members could help me out with more specific advice.
I know nothing about these motors and would like to learn as I go.
Goal: 350 with between 300-320 HP, just a nice street car with decent power. Priorities are engine, exhaust and suspension.
What's the best and most cost effective way to reach this goal? I'm looking to rebuild an engine so anyone that can chime in with where to find parts and even anyone willing to help with the build. The car is completely stock at this point. Has a 305 with 140,xxx original miles and a T5 trans (i assume)
A nice itemized list with rough prices would be excellent. I'm confused with all the talk of rollers, cams etc etc.
What am I realistically expecting to spend to achieve this goal? Starting a budget for this.
I live in Mississauga so I'd like to connect with local members.
Thanks for your time and advice! Hope to add my new ride to the project thread soon!
Ed

Re: 305-350 swap
Buy a running Vortec 350(from a Suburban)..Port the heads and a ZZ3/ZZ4 cam or aftermarket with the about the same duration/lift. Even more aggressive if you have carb.
The biggest choke to get to 300+ hp range is the intake if youre fuel injected(TBI/TPI) so porting the base and aftermarket runners is IMO a must. Or you can just use the Vortec harness and ECM.(dunno about fitment issues though)
Thats the cheapest way I can think of

Thanks for the quick reply Daz.
How much do you estimate your recommendations would cost?

Re: 305-350 swap
That all depends on what you can find. I sold a few 98 and 99's between $500-$1000 depending on how complete and kms on it.
As for cost, it still depend on what you have to start with and who is going to do the work.
There's also a difference between 300hp on paper,300hp on the dyno and true 300hp..lol
If you cant do it yourself, I think you will spend a minimum of $1500

Re: 305-350 swap
Thanks Daz. I was expecting something within $2000 but if it comes in at $1,500 I'll be very happy Z28 MeTaL HeAd - I'm at Creditview and Britannia. Getting the project car checked out at my local mechanic tomorrow and if all goes well, I'll hopefully have it in hand within the week. For sure, would like input from the local guys and regular meetups. Where are you located?

It's possible to reach your power goal with the 305 that's in the car http://www.popularhotrodding.com/engine ... ewall.html

Re: 305-350 swap
Firm - that's awesome. I'll be sure and update when I get the car. We should meet up definitely. I'll want to have a look at your rides and get some ideas
lb9 GTA - I'll have to read that in detail. Thanks for the link. I guess the real question is which option is more cost effective and consumes less time? Would the supporting mods on the 305 push it close to its limits where it's more likely to break? My understanding is the 350 can take a lot more and would generally be a lot more stable? Thoughts?
So far some great input. These are the kinds of things I definitely hope to get out of this thread. Keep 'em coming!

Aside from the 305 in that Camaro being a 2 bolt main and the 350 possibly being a 4 bolt there's really not much difference in the two engines save for the cylinder bore. They use the same crank, connecting rods, valve train. The extra bolts are for main bearing stability at higher RPM. Not really something you need to worry about in a 300hp street car. If your worried about breaking the 305 N/A you should hear what I'm planning on doing with mine. Or better yet, what some members of this board have done. You'd be surprised. I'm currently following a build on another forum by a guy in New Jersey who is trying to run a 9.XX ET with a turbo, stock bottom end 305 TPI powered GTA.

Re: 305-350 swap
Definitely intrigued now. Considering the 305 that's in here is at 140,xxx km it would still be in great shape.
Where would be the best place to buy the components necessary to duplicate what they've done in that article? I notice someone asked in the comments what the all-in cost would be but there's no reply. Any ideas roughly?
Seems like the carb and intake alone will run $800 - $1,000 ----pricing from Summit
Thanks for the help so far with the noob questions.

Re: 305-350 swap
Well the inspection didn't go as planned. While the car appeared on the surface to be a good base, in reality the underside was a different story. Sitting for too long resulted in "cancer" throughout the underbody. There was even a hole in the driver side floor. All in all, too much work to get it into decent shape.
Oh well....the search continues. Hoping with the warmer weather more 3rd gen's will go up for sale.

Re: 305-350 swap
Grab a jy 5.3L for five hundred bucks or so, buy the edelbrock MSD intake with ign control, stuff a 600 Holley on there, get a used F-body FEAD, and voila power goals met. Spend another 5-1000 on cam, springs, and pushrods and you'll make 450 hp at the crank easy. Or if you want to retain all the fulley stuff you can reuse pretty much all stock components and wire it yourself.
Plus the thing will hold together a hella lot longer than a sbc.

Re: 305-350 swap
