Does speed really kill? Sometimes, yes, but when the speed limits are set artificially low, and enforcement is targeted to those areas where the limit is far below traffic speed, then all the speed kills campaign does is keep drivers complacent about paying fines that don't improve safety......

Thoughts?

Post Re: Speed Kills Your Pocketbook
In a time where the entire world is hurting financially not only would be it be HIGHLY decent for the law makers to help in anyway they can to allow the private sector to produce, but the tax generation would benefit too. Win win~!

We need to get to work and get things done, and the faster this happens? Would help everyone get more done, faster, which means more income, more tax dollars, more GDP etc. The gains financially would be staggering when you look at the ludicrous amount of time most of us waste behind the wheel trying to get to and from work or to and from stores to SPEND etc. Truly ENORMOUS gains are at hand with a few simple changes to our laws *sigh* How blind are our so called leaders?

Plus there is solid safety data to back up raising the limits so I have to ask? Why the heck is this not happening PRONTO? It really just makes no sense at all so its no wonder these people have led us down a road where there is literally NO CENTS. Shame I say. Shame

As for the actual speed limits? They really should be set at unsafe speeds so we can focus on driving and safety and not have to be constantly checking the speedo to avoid tickets/issues etc. Eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, practice avoidance and move for space.

Plus if the limits were truly "unsafe" then no one would squabble a bit when someone gets a ticket. In fact it might just be plain shameful on the "law breakers" once again and return shine to the long lost luster to the badges our officers wear. I respect the badge, no doubt, but not the way its being used to muscle us into submissives by their policy makers. To serve and protect..... Well the only thing getting served is dog food and this may sound odd but I almost feel sorry for the officers who have to work under these rules and enforce these idiotic laws. It must feel terrible knowing what a sham speed limits are.

I've said it before, we also need MUCH better driver training. I saw some lady doing approx 50kmh pull right in front of a 5ton truck on the 427 SB yesterday. Poor trucker almost rolled over avoiding here and she was totally CLUELESS as to what was happening. That lady does not belong behind the wheel of anything. ( No m not sexist it just happened to be a lady yesterday is all )

How about the air we breathe? Idling cars produce the worst emissions possible. The faster we go? The more heat we generate and the cleaner we can burn the fuel and clean the air. Environmentalists WAKE UP and raise the limits and put money into improving the roads and bigger highways. Seriously we need MAJOR upgrades to our roads and highways

I believe limits should be raised however the drivers like the ones that have infested the roads in my area of the GTA are the reason they won't. These people have no idea what's going on around them, zero judgement, no decision making capabilities, no clue how to drive in bad weather, they're easily distracted, and have no idea what an appropriate speed actually is. They do 20-30 in 40 zones, 40-50 in 50-80 zones, and 70-80 on 400 series hwys in PERFECT conditions and they all run into each other. The unfortunate fact is that if the 404 and 401 were raised to 130 there would be a LOT of accidents from people doing 70 in the fast lane or trying to merge with 130kmh traffic while doing 60. To make it work I think the cars need to ditch the ABS, trac control, stability control, active cruise control, blind spot monitoring etc to force people to actually have drive their cars and scare the incapable out of the drivers seat. Next they need to enforce a minimum speed (condition dependant) as well as proper lane etiquette to create proper flow.

Better driver training needed, absolutely. Less administrative bs and much more challenging behind the wheel tests and EVERY test should be video logged and stored to prevent scams.

Supposedly a lot of people from Scarborough do their test out of town (like in the Kawarthas) because "there's too much traffic here." That should be outlawed because if you can't handle the traffic where you're driving, you shouldn't be driving there.
